RIITA - "THE QUARREL"

14.6. - 17.8.2008

Worker's Museum Werstas / Työväenmuseo Werstas

The theme for this group exhibition is the Finnish Civil War 90 years ago. Curated by Teemu Mäki.

Riita-näyttelyyn on kutsuttu suomalaisia kuvataiteilijoita ottamaan kantaa yhteiskunnallisiin ristiriitoihin. Riita on kantaaottavan taiteen laaja katselmus, jonka juryttää kuvataiteilija Teemu Mäki. Onko vastakkainasettelun aika ohi?

VENUS.NOT

9/3-30/3 2008
This project was incited by an urge to "repair" the missing limbs in a sculpture of a female torso. By stretching and nudging the digital images I got a totally new version of a classical sculpture, one where the limbs never end (I imagine them to continue outside the digital print). I applied a similar technique on other photographies from my collection of private and public interiors. This resulted in a series of strange and futuristic spaces. Traces of the digital manipulation are clearly visible, and I have left "clues" that lead back to the original images - a book shelf, a computer, or a blurred human figure.
The images are digital representations of a prolonged object. The torso of Venus never ends. The images are extended and compressed, flattened and twisted. In the "avatar" series classical Greek and roman sculptures are reincarnated in new bodies, and the animation "Arkipelag" shows sculptures floating in an endless sea.
